Bellaire Orchestra & Piano

Auditions for Incoming Orchestra Students

If you do not wish to audition, you will automatically be placed into LYRICA ORCHESTRA.  For all other students, there are two stages to the audition.  To qualify for Sinfonia (highest group), students must pass Stage 2.  ALL NEW STUDENTS PLACED INTO SINFONIA WILL BE ON A 1-YEAR PROBATIONARY PERIOD AND MAY BE REQUIRED TO RE-AUDITION AT THE END OF THEIR FIRST YEAR.

       Stage 1:  Video audition
Stage 2:  Live audition (invitation only)

STEP 1:  All new students should fill out the STUDENT INFO FORM:

STEP 2:  SUBMIT YOUR AUDITION VIDEO BY MAY 12, 2024.

STAGE 1 MUSIC SELECTIONS:
1.  SCALE -
Play the following 2 or 3 octave scale (a 3 octave scale increases your chance of being invited for a live audition).  Choose the bowings/fingerings/tempo that are most comfortable for you.
      Violin - D Major
      Viola -  G Major
      Cello -  G Major
      Bass -  G Major

2.  SOLO WORK -
Play two contrasting excerpts from an etude, concerto, sonata, or other solo work that best showcase your technical skill and lyrical style.  These excerpts can be from the same piece, or from different pieces.   Do not use piano accompaniment.  Each excerpt should not exceed 2 minutes.  If you do not have a solo work, you may use an orchestral piece.  However, using an orchestral piece will not accurately show your skill level and will limit your chances of being placed into a higher orchestra.

VIDEO REQUIREMENTS:  Your entire body must be visible.  This includes your hands and instrument.  Make sure the music stand does not block the view.  You may sit or stand.  Dress comfortably but nicely (shorts/tank tops, pajamas are not acceptable).

STAGE 2 LIVE AUDITION (INVITATION ONLY):  Live auditions will be in late May. You will be notified of dates/times via email.

1.  Play 1 major and 1 melodic minor scale of your choice.   Both scales must be 3 octaves.
2.  Play the solo excerpts you played for your video audition.
3.  You will sight-read a short excerpt.
